Microsoft SQL Server 2005 performance

Hi,

I have a Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Enterprise installed on Windows Server 2003, and developing web application for 500 clients. So I am interested will I have any performance issues if I put in 'Articles' table, data for all 500 clients and then filter it on client ID, or should I make 500 'Articles' tables for every client one with different name and then change sqldatasource for gridview depending on which client is working on it. I will have, beside 'Articles' table, another 10 tables, which means 5500 tables total, if I use second approach, on first I will have only 11 tables. So I am asking is it better to have more tables with less data, or less tables with more data. And what are pros and cons for both approach.

One table with different ArticleIDs is the way it should be. With proper indexes you should just be fine.

Windows Update Web Page indicates I have BOTH a
SUCCESS and FAILURE for

?Is it possible for my machine to have TWO DIFFERENT MS SQL Server Express installations? Is the problem real or some small ghost issue?
I do have a trial CD from Microsoft .. Visual Studio 2005 Team Suite.

This has failed to install twice already this morning, and I've got a third Automatic Update message, which will probably be the same MS SQL Server trying and failing to install. This has been going on for at least a month--though not with multiple attempts in a day.

I wish I knew whether this was simply noise or whether it's something I should focus on, but characteristically, it's hidden behind opaque names and failure messages. I often feel like I don't own the computer I paid for; I'm simply maintaining it for MS.

|||Are you running ACT! on your computer? I am and it took an ACT! technician to get it resolved. It only took a full week of effort. LOL Yes I am serious a full week! One of the things you might try is uninstalling the SQL Server 2005 and then letting automatic update reinstall it. jn|||I uninstalled SQL Server 2005, reinstalled it and I am still having this problem. This is bad.|||

I got the same problem but got it resolved.
Apparently some of the ms sql server services (NOT any Express service) like SQL server active directory helper, and the sql server browser were disabled on my machine. I put them on an "Automatic" startup type and the update worked fine.

I hope it will help any of you.

How do I get rid of this nuisance?|||Following the advice of the previous posts I simply set the sql server express and sql browser services to manual start up and started the services (previously there were disabled and not running). Then I installed the service pack and it worked. Thankx for the advice.

What version of ACT! are you running. I just installed ACT! 2007 and now have this issue. During the install, it corrupted .Net Framework 2.0 and SQL Server. Now all the other apps like QuickBooks, and OneCare Live don't operate the same.

I am also running Act!2007(9) - I started having problems when auotmatic update tried to install the upgrade to version 9.0.1.162. The best thing for you to do is call Act and tell them you are having an installation problem. They'll give you free support for installation issues. That's what I did and they finally corrected the issue by having a technician take over my computer remotely. They had to make a lot of changes to the system files and then manually unistall ACT to get it worked out. Then I had to download the trial version of Act from their website - which is always the most current version - and re register it. It was VERY time consuming. Act techies worked on it for over 4 hours on 3 different occasions! Hopefully for you they have this figured out. Good luck.

I feel your pain. I was on the phone with them (ACT Support) yesterday for 3hours 50minutes for the install. They crashed and deleted my .NET Framework, killed my security damaged QuickBooks (somehow) and then told me to call the other vendors to restore my data. I don't know why I put myself through so much pain with Sage.

Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine (MSDE 2000) Release A

My objective is to use Enterprise Manager to move (copy) my SQL db from the server to my windows desktop computer.

I downloaded MSDE and am having trouble installing it, no doubt because I do not understand the documentaion (ReadMeMSDE2000A.htm).

When I try to run setup, I get that message that says:

"A strong SA password is required for security reasons. Please use SAPWD switch to supply the same."

Considering my purpose, do I need a "strong" SA password? If not, how do I get around it? If yes, how do I set it up?

I am a Mac user so I have poor windows skills, please make it as painless as possible for me, thanks!

"The instance name specified is not valid."

Note that your code didn't even use the instance name.

Actually on my C drive the folder is called MSDERela. I tried changing your code to indicate that and it still doesn't work. Same error message.

Update the login information (the password) in the
services. The services are still trying to use the old
password.
Consider using a separate account for running SQL server
and SQL Server Agent. Plan on updating the password in
services as well when you change the service account
password.

You need to set the new password in the Services applet in Control Panel for
your SQL Server service (MSSQLServer is the default name). If you run SQL
Server Agent with the same account, then you should change that too. There
are details and instructions in Books Online, in the section "Changing
Passwords and User Accounts".

I am running SQL Server 2005 bata on my Windows Server 2003, web edition
machine. Recently got an error that the Bata had expired. I ignored this.
However, other C# apps using the Db started having problems.
Uninstalled .Net Framework Version 2. I downloaded the most
recent version from MS, installed the new version.
Now I can't run Management studio or the profiler. Get the following errors:
'Procedure entry point _CxxFrameHandler3 could not be located in the
dynamic link library MSVCR80.dll '
and a follow on error
..."\v2.0.50215\mscorwks.dll could not be loaded".
How do I get back to being able to use these tools?

The .NET versions are tightly linked to the SQL Server Betas.
Download the SQL Server September 2005 CTP and the Visual Studio 2005 RC1.
They are the newest and are a perfect match.

In addition to Mike's comments you need to be very careful about
uninstall order of components from the old SQL Server 2005 and .NET
Framework builds. That is described in some detail in the documents
that come with September CTP.

Thanks for the good info. But I got myself into more trouble. I thought I'd
try to uninstall Visual Studio and Sever. All the .Net stuff seems to
uninstall and the Server itself uninstalls, but tools like management studio
and profiler don't. They are in my start menu but not in add and remove
programs. Result is that Sever will not install the new tools. Got any
experience at get rid of this stuff while saving existing databases?

Microsoft SQL 2000 Troubling the Network

We have installed Microsoft SQL 2000 on a Windows NT Server, which is connected to our network, that have one more Novell Network Server.

When we start the MSSQL2000 database, after a while the network is jammed, and everyone is facing difficulties to work in the network. When we stop this SQL server the network speed comes to normal.

You can download sp3 for sqlserver from Microsoft website.|||You should go for SP3 right now, and as prescribed download the pack from MS SQL (http://www.microsoft.com/sql) website to get rid of the issues and also refer to SLAMMER affected measures in the website.|||A note about SP3.

We applied SP3 to a database which was a replication publisher, and it could no longer produce snapshots.

There is a Service Pack 3a -- I recommend it over SP3. SP3 can cause problems, including start-up and MDAC problems.

Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server error '80004005' on Load Balancing

I have posted this also in one forum. Somebody might have idea here.

We have four Windows 2003 advance servers with SP 3 configured on NLB.
Each of them has one NIC.
Recently we started to get frequent time-out error messages from web applications on those servers when they try to establish the connection with the SQL 2005. If you run web pages application to connect to sql server 10 times, 9 times you will get good connection results and 1 time you will get time-out.

We thought it was only in IIS and Firewall pooling connections. There were open connection threads on IIS, where in fact the firewall already disconnect it. When a new request from IIS is set, sometimes it uses the aged out connections. This was one of the cause. What we did is modify the timeout connection from firewall 1 minute more than the IIS timeout expiration. Though we still encounter timeout expired once in a while. Any idea?

Another thing that might help to analyze this issue:

I tried to check the Profiler for the timeout expiration. On the Profiler, SQL grants login (AuditLogin) but kicked it out right away (AuditLogut) for that specific timeout connection. No duration cost.

98. We are upgrading to Windows XP Pro and Microsoft MSDE.
Does it make a difference if I update MSDE first and then Windows XP or
should I update Windows XP first?

I have found that it is a good practice to update your OS first then upgrade
any software(MSDE). If you have the luxury you should re install the OS and
bypass any upgrade paths. You will get a cleaner install of everything this
way and likely prevent any "ghost" bugs later on.

Microsoft Data Link Error

Dear All!

I use a Microsoft SQL server 2005 under windows 2000, and I would like to connect to this server from an another windows 2000 computer under Access 2003.

When I click to test connection buttom, I get an error mesige: "Test connection failed because of an error in initializing provider. Login faild user 'raktaros'. The user is not associated wth a trusted SQL server connection."

Is he a SQL Server user or just a windows local user on the server.

The latter won't work, the former will if the security mode of the SQL Server is set to SQL Server and Windows using the Properties of the Server in Object Explorer on the security section

|||Your SQL Server is setup for WIndows Authentication. If you use this you are not able to use SQL Server Authentication anymore, nor passing the user parameter within the connection process.

Microsoft best practices for implementing windows authentication for sql server 2005

Microsoft recommends using Windows authentication instead of SQL Server authentication in SQL Server 2005 for improved security. What are the Microsoft best practices for implementing this? Will be helpful if someone also provides some links that talks about this....

The recommendation of using Windows authentication instead of SQL authentication is one of the best practices recommendations. One suggestion I have is to explicitly provision a Windows principal to make connection faster than if it were made by virtue of group membership.

Once you've established a connection, the authentication method that you used becomes less relevant. It might matter, for example, if the connection will be used to access resources outside the server, because in some scenarios, you would be able to go out using the Windows credentials, but for work performed inside the server it will not matter what was the authentication mode.

Windows authentication is recommended because with it, the authentication is done by Windows and SQL Server would not need to verify login passwords. Once you performed the authentication step and connected to the server, the way you authenticated becomes less important.

If the connections that you pool are made with Windows authentication, then you are taking advantage of both. Any other considerations would depend on the specific requirements of your application.

Message "Starting up" in SQL Server Logs

Hello, I'm working with Java and SQL Server 2000, running on a Windows 2000
Server. When the sistem is on-line SQL Server takes more or less than 80Mb of
memory, the app pool connection manage ten (10) conections to the DB, the
time pass and SQL Server takes more and more memory, over 400Mb.
Into de SQL Server Logs (Enterprise Manager-Managment) said that every
minute my database is "Starting up database "xxx"".
If some body knows the answer...

You probably have autoclose on for the databases. Turning that off will take care of the "starting up"
messages.
As for memory management, probably normal. See below for more information
