Microsoft Participation in this forum

The VSTS team have posted a really useful manifesto for their participation in MSDN forums which I have read here: https://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=885414&SiteID=1

I'd like to politely suggest that the SSIS team do something similar on here. People have different expectations of what involvement Microsoft do/should have on this forum and it would help if Microsoft could clarify their position on this.

I agree too.

|||I agree, I'm confused as to the purpose of this forum - is it for MS SSIS experts to assist customers or simply for customers to help each other?|||Mainly,I think it's for developers, DBA and that kind of people.|||

I agree as well. A MS response would be nice, too. Even a 'we will not post such a document' would, at least, be a response...

Many users don't mark their posts as answered though... So it's tough to tell without going into each thread. Also, many users don't respond back when we ask for clarifying remarks.

Phil|||I find myself half agreeing and half disagreeing. I agree on the basis of having technical background provided and input that is informed from a design perspective and thus enabling performance enhanced responses. On the other hand, original designers may find startling results from experiences and discover some preiously unknown implications to their baby. There are usually lab results that do not correspond to applied results at some cases and appreciation to peer assistance is paramount in that regard. However, in an attempt to offer some kid of solution, I suppose that the best way to deal with this issue is to have two parallel fora - one on a peer level and one offering a platform for formulating best practises, guiding development, enhancing performance, and driving future mutations to the underlying technologies. This way, one can attempt the best practises at all times without having to go through muddles of unrefined suggestions - and only when stuck, find ways which others found means to get through the deterrent.|||I too agree with the idea.|||Yes imagine a place where proprietary software vendors provide support for their products at a reasonable price...what a concept...|||

Hi Everybody,

Here is the perspective of an insider; SSIS team member:

First of all, this is a great forum. The posting traffic is quite amazing. SSIS is the most popular SQL forum and one of the top MSDN forums overall, which is amazing for such a young product.

We do care about our community. Even when you do not see us present we are scanning these messages and everybody on the team has been aware of this particular thread since Jamie posted it. There has been lot of changes in this team since we shipped SQL Server 2005. You probably started noticing new names with MSFT suffix posting here. There will be more of them popping up. We are all quite busy, and sometimes we have been unable to handle the volume, breadth and depth of messages that we have to go through and know how to answer. There are many objective reasons I can iterate through to excuse our decreased attention on this community, but the main one for me is, that we failed to set the clear goal, organize and motivate the internal participants. We are working on that.

We have a strong desire to rebuild our presence on this forum. We had a few attempts to get a grip lately and will keep trying. Please be patient.

We are not yet ready to make promises. Our capacities are limited and the volume is great. I also want to restate what seems to be obvious to folks who frequent this site: the answers will continue to mainly come from peer users who are ahead on the same path. We have great MVPs and advanced users who show exceptional knowledge and experience with the product. Most of the questions get handled nicely by them. We still have a great number of answered threads that are not marked properly. The percentage of answered threads is the main metrics used to observe forum activities. Please mark them as appropriate. We cannot commit to have a certain percentage of answered threads, because we simply cannot invest enough time in moderating (marking/deleting/moving messages etc) the forum.

In my view, the SSIS team should show its presence in filling the remaining gaps that require deep implementation knowledge and acknowledging things we learn here (i.e. our mistakes, improvements to prioritize, nice ideas we collect). To go beyond that, should be personal decision of individual team members to use their free time and help the community. We as a team should encourage but cannot require that.

I want to sincerely thank to everybody who comes to this forum for showing the great passion for our product and being courteous, professional and unselfish while helping others.

Thank you,

Bob Bojanic, SSIS Team

Great post, Bob!

I'm relatively new to the forum myself, but have noticed that there is a good community of helpful folks who seem to be dedicated to helping out their peers. (You've been posting a bunch too. ) SSIS is a great product, and hopefully the lot of us working together will help boost both understanding and adoption...
