I have three questions: Could anyone help.
1. How much does a Microsoft SQL Server client license cost?
2. If we have web interface as the front end and SQL server as the back end,
do we need client licenses for those accessing their databases via the web?
3. Also if we have people accessing the server with Access,do we need
licenses for those?

It's better to buy a per-processor licence because you do not know the
number of users (or you have developed a database access componenet and you
need to limit the number of concurrent users).

the only option is per processor license! You can't use per user connection
license.

can install this tool on a remote machine and you could analyze a production
server from a remote machine (as long as you can connect to target SQL
Server from remote machine)
SQL Best Practices Analyzer relies on the BPA Repository database, which is
a SQL Server database created during SQL BPA installation. You can have this
BPA repository database created on local SQL Server or a remote SQL Server.
SQL Best Practices Analyzer requires the following components to be
installed on the machine

|||Thanks for this. perhaps I should have been a bit more precise. I am a
developer and I'm having a beef with my DBA who has installed this on the
live production server. My argument is that this should be installed and run
on a test system as there is no need to test the performance of the hardware
on which the DB runs on.
If it's OK on Test then it gets ported to live. I believe that anything that
does not need to be installed on a production server should not be on there
as there is a danger that something else running on the box may result in a
loss of service or may intoduce a risk of virus or attack. This tool requires
the dot.net framework and I am a strong fan of this being an asp.net
developer. But until this (dot.net) becomes a core part of the OS (i.e. when
it's installed by default on XP, win2003 etc) I categorise this as a
development add-on and has an attached if installed.
If MS release a security patch for dot.net then I need to schedule downtime
on the production server to apply this.
So back to my original question, which is in itself is about best practises,
should it be best practise to install the BPA on a production server?

I should imagine it would depend on the size & complexity of the 6.5 DB

For a simple DB I would probably just script out the Schema then, run script & right click - import the data on the 2005 box then - suck it & see fixing any issues (IF there are any) in testing.

Or you could spend your life reading up on the possible failures & effects that may occur as Satya suggests

My machine name is Leigh, i run win xp home edition, and MS SQL server 2005, so the above command in my case should be :

sqlcmd -E -S (local)\sqlexpress -Q "sp_grantlogin N' Leigh\ASPNET'" ? (which doesn't work i assume because not happens )

Installing SQL 2005 install in progress sertup error :

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 RTM merge replication issues

We are trying to implement merge replication between 2 servers. Database size is around 11GB.

When I tried to create publication, snaphot agent is failing with following errror.

Error: 14151, Severity: 18, State: 1.
Replication-Replication Snapshot Subsystem: agent NBTENTSQL1X-PayDirectWeb-PayDirectPub-2 failed. The
replication agent had encountered an exception.
Source: Replication
Exception Type: Microsoft.SqlServer.Replication.ReplicationAgentSqlException
Exception Message: String or binary data would be truncated.
Cannot find the object 'MSmerge_sel_4D388

The table where the snapshot is breaking contains around 169 columns. Can someone please help me get through this error ?

Are you using vertical partitioning to replicate subset of the columns of the table? You may be hitting an known issue in Microsoft SQL Server 2005 where the list of column names for the table is longer than 4K and hence gets truncated in an internal proc.

I am trying to install Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services, Receiving the following error

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services -- Error 1303. The installer has insufficient privileges to access this directory: C:\Config.Msi. The installation cannot continue. Log on as administrator or contact your system administrator.

I am already logged in as Administrator and should have all the necessary permissions to install software

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 performance

Hi,

I have a Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Enterprise installed on Windows Server 2003, and developing web application for 500 clients. So I am interested will I have any performance issues if I put in 'Articles' table, data for all 500 clients and then filter it on client ID, or should I make 500 'Articles' tables for every client one with different name and then change sqldatasource for gridview depending on which client is working on it. I will have, beside 'Articles' table, another 10 tables, which means 5500 tables total, if I use second approach, on first I will have only 11 tables. So I am asking is it better to have more tables with less data, or less tables with more data. And what are pros and cons for both approach.

One table with different ArticleIDs is the way it should be. With proper indexes you should just be fine.

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 JDBC Driver

I'm getting the following exception when attempting to connect to SQL Server 2005 using Microsoft's new JDBC driver:

com.microsoft.sqlserver.jdbc.SQLServerException: The TCP/IP connection to the host has failed. java.net.ConnectException: Connection refused: connect

The help docs suggest checking connectivity using telnet. So attempting to connect via telnet to 127.0.0.1:1433 generates:

Could not open connection to the host, on port 23: Connect failed.

So I try to start telnet:

net start telnet

I get the following error message:

The service cannot be started either because it is disabled or because it has no enables devices associated with it.

Can anyone help?

It seems that the TCP protocols is not enabled on your SQL Server.

You may need to enable TCP and *restart* SQL Server.

An article on how to do it for SQL Express is at http://blogs.msdn.com/sqlexpress/archive/2005/05/05/415084.aspx. The steps are similar for any other edition of SQL Server 2005.

Hello, I would love to know where people are discussing the book Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Integration Services book by Kirk Hasleden.

I'm on page 41 and I'm getting an error with the example in the "SELECT "2004" FROM Sales.vSalesPersonSalesByFiscalYears"
part because there is not a table called Sales.vSalesPersonSalesByFiscalYears in the AdventureWorks database.

For setup issues, it might even be better to file bugs at
http://lab.msdn.microsoft.com/ProductFeedback/, since the MS presence
in the setup groups have been spotty lately. However, you need to include
much more information. You get a hold bunch of logs with the SQL setup,
although I don't remember exactly where they are located. At a minimum,
you should include in which phase of the installtion this happens.

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Toolkit Is not in my Add Remove Programs how do I unin

I have Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Toolkit installed but there is something from with the installation since every time that I try and create a Report Server Project It gives me error

Could not load file or assembly "Microsoft.ReportingServices.Designer, Version 9.0.242.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=89845dcd8080cc91' or one of its dependencies. The system cannopt find the file spesified.

How can I reinstall it or repair the installation so it will work. I have uninstalled every SQL2000 component in Add Remove Programs and reinstalled them. The problem is however that I cannot see an entry for "Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Toolkit" in the Add Remove programs in Windows XP Profesional.

Can someone please help me. Maybe tell me where the uninstall file is located on disk?

This may not be what you are expecting but it could be you don't have IIS installed in your box and when IIS is not installed, in full SQL Server editions the installer skips Reporting services. So make sure IIS is installed before trying to open reporting services because it will not run without it. Hope this helps.|||

Thanks for the quick response.

I have everything else working, IIS is working and I can access the report manager and the report server url's, those all work fine. The problem comes in when I try and create a Report Server Project in Visual Studio. As soon as I try and create the project I get the error I mentioned above. It is as if it doesn't find the Reporting Services Design Assembly, but I've done a search on the PC and I did find the dll, so I might need to spesify somewhere where it is?

I'd like to just uninstall the Toolkit and Reinstall it but the Express installer doesn't support uninstalling and the Add Remove Programs in Control Panel doesn't have an Entry for the Toolkit.

Hi i tried to install the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Service Pack 2 but was unable to do so. I got an error message saying: Error Code: 0x2B22

This has failed to install twice already this morning, and I've got a third Automatic Update message, which will probably be the same MS SQL Server trying and failing to install. This has been going on for at least a month--though not with multiple attempts in a day.

I wish I knew whether this was simply noise or whether it's something I should focus on, but characteristically, it's hidden behind opaque names and failure messages. I often feel like I don't own the computer I paid for; I'm simply maintaining it for MS.

|||Are you running ACT! on your computer? I am and it took an ACT! technician to get it resolved. It only took a full week of effort. LOL Yes I am serious a full week! One of the things you might try is uninstalling the SQL Server 2005 and then letting automatic update reinstall it. jn|||I uninstalled SQL Server 2005, reinstalled it and I am still having this problem. This is bad.|||

I got the same problem but got it resolved.
Apparently some of the ms sql server services (NOT any Express service) like SQL server active directory helper, and the sql server browser were disabled on my machine. I put them on an "Automatic" startup type and the update worked fine.

I hope it will help any of you.

What version of ACT! are you running. I just installed ACT! 2007 and now have this issue. During the install, it corrupted .Net Framework 2.0 and SQL Server. Now all the other apps like QuickBooks, and OneCare Live don't operate the same.

I am also running Act!2007(9) - I started having problems when auotmatic update tried to install the upgrade to version 9.0.1.162. The best thing for you to do is call Act and tell them you are having an installation problem. They'll give you free support for installation issues. That's what I did and they finally corrected the issue by having a technician take over my computer remotely. They had to make a lot of changes to the system files and then manually unistall ACT to get it worked out. Then I had to download the trial version of Act from their website - which is always the most current version - and re register it. It was VERY time consuming. Act techies worked on it for over 4 hours on 3 different occasions! Hopefully for you they have this figured out. Good luck.

I feel your pain. I was on the phone with them (ACT Support) yesterday for 3hours 50minutes for the install. They crashed and deleted my .NET Framework, killed my security damaged QuickBooks (somehow) and then told me to call the other vendors to restore my data. I don't know why I put myself through so much pain with Sage.

Thanks for the reply on SQL Exp SP2. Today I have not received the update error warnings. But the day is young. Once I get a solution, I'll post it.

This has failed to install twice already this morning, and I've got a third Automatic Update message, which will probably be the same MS SQL Server trying and failing to install. This has been going on for at least a month--though not with multiple attempts in a day.

I wish I knew whether this was simply noise or whether it's something I should focus on, but characteristically, it's hidden behind opaque names and failure messages. I often feel like I don't own the computer I paid for; I'm simply maintaining it for MS.

|||Are you running ACT! on your computer? I am and it took an ACT! technician to get it resolved. It only took a full week of effort. LOL Yes I am serious a full week! One of the things you might try is uninstalling the SQL Server 2005 and then letting automatic update reinstall it. jn|||I uninstalled SQL Server 2005, reinstalled it and I am still having this problem. This is bad.|||

I got the same problem but got it resolved.
Apparently some of the ms sql server services (NOT any Express service) like SQL server active directory helper, and the sql server browser were disabled on my machine. I put them on an "Automatic" startup type and the update worked fine.

I hope it will help any of you.

How do I get rid of this nuisance?|||Following the advice of the previous posts I simply set the sql server express and sql browser services to manual start up and started the services (previously there were disabled and not running). Then I installed the service pack and it worked. Thankx for the advice.

What version of ACT! are you running. I just installed ACT! 2007 and now have this issue. During the install, it corrupted .Net Framework 2.0 and SQL Server. Now all the other apps like QuickBooks, and OneCare Live don't operate the same.

I am also running Act!2007(9) - I started having problems when auotmatic update tried to install the upgrade to version 9.0.1.162. The best thing for you to do is call Act and tell them you are having an installation problem. They'll give you free support for installation issues. That's what I did and they finally corrected the issue by having a technician take over my computer remotely. They had to make a lot of changes to the system files and then manually unistall ACT to get it worked out. Then I had to download the trial version of Act from their website - which is always the most current version - and re register it. It was VERY time consuming. Act techies worked on it for over 4 hours on 3 different occasions! Hopefully for you they have this figured out. Good luck.

I feel your pain. I was on the phone with them (ACT Support) yesterday for 3hours 50minutes for the install. They crashed and deleted my .NET Framework, killed my security damaged QuickBooks (somehow) and then told me to call the other vendors to restore my data. I don't know why I put myself through so much pain with Sage.

Thanks for the reply on SQL Exp SP2. Today I have not received the update error warnings. But the day is young. Once I get a solution, I'll post it.

I download Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Evaluation Edition (Self-extracting executables: X86 Executable ) from Microsoft site but when I try to unpack it the unpack program says it is corrupt. I have downloaded this file more than 5 times and still the same problem occurs. Is it only me or other has same problem? Any suggestsion?

I have installed Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Evaluation Edition. The file size is now 4035. When I tried to add new data file name,I am getting the below error.

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 DTS Designer Components

Hi,

I learned this from one of SSIS book-Migrating from Data Transformation Services to Integration Services in SQL.

For the design time components, Microsoft has created a special distribution called the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 DTS Designer Components. The Designer Components distribution replaces the components that get uninstalled when you upgrade your last instance of SQL Server 2000. If you want to upgrade all your SQL Server 2000 instances, this is the best and only option for recovering the DTS designer.

Is anybody heard of this 2005 DTS Designer component?

Where to download? How it works? Any experience to will be appreciated.

Our production database set on cluster SQL Server 2005 (SP1). I installed
client tools for all 4 nodes. Every node should show Microsoft SQL Server
2005 and Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 after click All Programs, but in one
node the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 disappeared.
While I go to Add or Remove Programs, I saw following items:
Microsoft SQL Server 2005 (64 bit)
Microsoft SQL Server Backward compatibility
Microsoft SQL Server Books online (English)
Microsoft SQL Server Native Client
Microsoft SQL Server Setup Support Files (English)
Microsoft SQL Server VSS Writer
It seems like nobody removed the client tools, but why it doesn’t show? How
to restore it to Start -> All Programs -> Microsoft SQL Server 2005?

The client tools were never installed on that node. The installer for the
tools is not cluster-aware. Each node's client tools must be installed
separately from the local machine.
