Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Toolkit Is not in my Add Remove Programs how do I unin

I have Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Toolkit installed but there is something from with the installation since every time that I try and create a Report Server Project It gives me error

Could not load file or assembly "Microsoft.ReportingServices.Designer, Version 9.0.242.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=89845dcd8080cc91' or one of its dependencies. The system cannopt find the file spesified.

How can I reinstall it or repair the installation so it will work. I have uninstalled every SQL2000 component in Add Remove Programs and reinstalled them. The problem is however that I cannot see an entry for "Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Toolkit" in the Add Remove programs in Windows XP Profesional.

Can someone please help me. Maybe tell me where the uninstall file is located on disk?

Any help will be great

Manu Thanks

This may not be what you are expecting but it could be you don't have IIS installed in your box and when IIS is not installed, in full SQL Server editions the installer skips Reporting services. So make sure IIS is installed before trying to open reporting services because it will not run without it. Hope this helps.|||

Thanks for the quick response.

I have everything else working, IIS is working and I can access the report manager and the report server url's, those all work fine. The problem comes in when I try and create a Report Server Project in Visual Studio. As soon as I try and create the project I get the error I mentioned above. It is as if it doesn't find the Reporting Services Design Assembly, but I've done a search on the PC and I did find the dll, so I might need to spesify somewhere where it is?

I'd like to just uninstall the Toolkit and Reinstall it but the Express installer doesn't support uninstalling and the Add Remove Programs in Control Panel doesn't have an Entry for the Toolkit.

For me, several attempts to install "Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Service Pack 2" via MS-update get stuck. The progress bar doesn't budge after a long lunch.

did you get the resolved? I'm haveing the same issue.

Sean

|||Me too. It continually tries to install although AFAIK it IS installed.
|||

No I did not get this resolved.

I suppose this creates uncertainty for me and perhaps others.

Please excuse my late reply.

|||

This has failed to install twice already this morning, and I've got a third Automatic Update message, which will probably be the same MS SQL Server trying and failing to install. This has been going on for at least a month--though not with multiple attempts in a day.

I wish I knew whether this was simply noise or whether it's something I should focus on, but characteristically, it's hidden behind opaque names and failure messages. I often feel like I don't own the computer I paid for; I'm simply maintaining it for MS.

|||I am having this same issue also - continuously tries to update but says it can't - any help out there?

jn|||

I'm having the same problem,

Has anybody been able to resolve this, its anoying the heck out of me?

Abe

|||Are you running ACT! on your computer? I am and it took an ACT! technician to get it resolved. It only took a full week of effort. LOL Yes I am serious a full week! One of the things you might try is uninstalling the SQL Server 2005 and then letting automatic update reinstall it. jn|||I uninstalled SQL Server 2005, reinstalled it and I am still having this problem. This is bad.|||

I got the same problem but got it resolved.
Apparently some of the ms sql server services (NOT any Express service) like SQL server active directory helper, and the sql server browser were disabled on my machine. I put them on an "Automatic" startup type and the update worked fine.

I hope it will help any of you.

|||My automatic update of Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Service Pack 2 (KB 921896) keeps failing and I do not even use SQL Server. How do I get rid of this nuisance?|||Following the advice of the previous posts I simply set the sql server express and sql browser services to manual start up and started the services (previously there were disabled and not running). Then I installed the service pack and it worked. Thankx for the advice.
|||

What version of ACT! are you running. I just installed ACT! 2007 and now have this issue. During the install, it corrupted .Net Framework 2.0 and SQL Server. Now all the other apps like QuickBooks, and OneCare Live don't operate the same.

Thanks,

JN2

|||

I am also running Act!2007(9) - I started having problems when auotmatic update tried to install the upgrade to version 9.0.1.162. The best thing for you to do is call Act and tell them you are having an installation problem. They'll give you free support for installation issues. That's what I did and they finally corrected the issue by having a technician take over my computer remotely. They had to make a lot of changes to the system files and then manually unistall ACT to get it worked out. Then I had to download the trial version of Act from their website - which is always the most current version - and re register it. It was VERY time consuming. Act techies worked on it for over 4 hours on 3 different occasions! Hopefully for you they have this figured out. Good luck.

jn

|||

I feel your pain. I was on the phone with them (ACT Support) yesterday for 3hours 50minutes for the install. They crashed and deleted my .NET Framework, killed my security damaged QuickBooks (somehow) and then told me to call the other vendors to restore my data. I don't know why I put myself through so much pain with Sage.

Thanks for the reply on SQL Exp SP2. Today I have not received the update error warnings. But the day is young. Once I get a solution, I'll post it.

Microsoft SQL Express 2005 Installation Failure

I can get SQL SERVER 2005 to install it goes through the extracting files then gives me an error message that says "SQL Server Setup unexpectedly failed. for more information, review the setup summery log file " . I don't think i have any beta versons of Visual Studio or SQL I do have Accouting Express with has something with SQL I don't know if that will stop my installation. I really need SQL to work for my business.

Please Help ME!!!

Can you search through your SQL install log directory for the text string "value 3" and post the 10 or so lines above that? It may give a more descriptive error message.

Microsoft Reports

I am trying to create some reports in MS Visual Studio Express. Is there way to make report viewer or report templates available in Visual Studio Express ?

Hi,

Do you mean those express editions like Visual Web Developer, right?

Business Intelligence Development Studio is the environment that you will use to develop reports and report models in SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services. Business Intelligence Development Studio is theMicrosoft Visual Studio 2005 environment with enhancements that are specific to SQL Server 2005 business intelligence solutions.

Thanks.

Microsoft No Longer Lets Us Download SqlExpress. Why?

Microsoft no longer lets us download SqlServer Express 2005. Does anybody know why? I thought it was free.

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=220549b5-0b07-4448-8848-dcc397514b41&DisplayLang=en

In fact, none of the many options here work at all:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/browse.aspx?displaylang=en&productID=9F07F9CC-C308-4EBF-A4E9-2B8530AB1EA8

How come? Is there someplace else I can get it? I just don't understand why they do this stuff with no explanation. I'm trying to learn C# and I need a database.

Any help would be appreciated.

    |||I think the point is being missed. It's failing to download at all no matter where the OP goes, correct? If that is the case then it may be an IE security setting.|||

    Yes, exactly. I have been trying for over two weeks now and still cannot download any product from any category from Microsoft. I always get the "page not found error". I spent one hour with a technichian from my ISP (Comcast) and they made sure there were no issues with their company provided router or names server. They determined that it is definitely something wrong at Microsoft. We also tried lowering all security settings with Explorer and that didn't help either. I am not using a proxy.

    Then I actually paid $35 to Microsoft to get help but that person couldn't help me, either, but the trouble ticket is still open. So far, Microsoft hasn't gotten back to me because every email they send me asking how I am doing does not come with a return address so I cannot reply. Sad Why they would send me email and then hide the return address just mystifies me to no end.

    I gues this is the point where I have to reinstall Windows but, geez, what a pain in the neck. God only know what box somewhere on some window has to be checked to fix this. lol. Maybe it is a sign to switch to Vista.

    i just tried all of those links from all of my machines and they all work fine so it's something specific to your machine. i would say that it sounds like a software problem on your internet explorer.

    My suggestion would be to hold down left control to bypass any popup blockers or third party software installed into IE that could interact badly with it.

    uninstall google/yahoo toolbars (or equivalent programs), weatherbug, etc

    try installing firefox.

    or

    try downgraded from ie7 to 6 or upgrading from ie 6 to 7 (didn't really pay attention to which you're on)

    you also might want to run a spybot S&D check or adaware ot clear any bho (browser helper objects) that may be installed into ie)

    lastly, be sure you aren't already downloading 2 files when you go to hit download as ie only will download 2 files at a time (i think)

    |||I also echo that; I can get to the download page fine and also the download proceeds fine.|||

    Whew, I still cannot download from Microsoft. So I downloaded Firfefox and got the same issue: page not found.

    I also tried the manual link that Microsoft gives should the normal download link fail. That failed, too.

    So then I tried cleaning out the hosts file: no luck there either.

    Next, I tried flushing the DNS server. Didn't work.

    I turned off the firewall, turned off virus checking, and lowered all security settings in IE to the lowest. No luck.

    Then I bought Vista and installed it out of desperation. That didn't work either.

    Sooooo, now I finally found a page posted by somebody else who uses Comcast, like me, just 3 days ago and it seems to be an issue with the Comcast DNS server. When I get home from work I am going to put in alternate DNS names servers in my network connections instead of the automatic ones. If it works I will tell you.

    So far I have spent $550 to try and fix this problem and a total of 11 hours speaking with help desks. It is mind-numbingly dull repeating this problem over and over again to all the people from India that I have spoken with.

    Davicito

    |||

    I can now tell you that my problem is solved. Turned out it was the DNS server from Comcast. I had to go into Network Connections and manually select the DNS servers by turning off the automatic selection process.

    I am using the following instead:

    4.2.2.4

    4.2.2.5

    Now I can download anything from Microsoft plus all my other internet connections are much, much faster, too!

    So Comcast is the problem.

    I upgraded to Vista for nothing but, actually, now I am glad I did. It's fantastic to use. I bought a video card, too, so that I can use the new Aero look. I am really liking it much better than XP

    However, now I'm stuck at, how do you fix it? I don't completely understand how you switched servers and whatnot. A run through would be GREAT.

    Mgt Studio Express vs Mgt Studio "Full" questions

    I am currently using Management Studio Express to administer remote SQLServer databases I support as a DBA. I notice that I cannot "see" DTS packages on the remote server from Express, but when I login directly to the server (Term Services) and use the local Management Studio (Full?), that I CAN see the DTS packages.

    1) What are the other differences between Management Studio Express and Management Studio "Full"?

    2) Is it possible to aquire and install (upgrade) on my workstation, to Management Studio "Full" so that I can take advantage of the additional capabilities the "Express" version does not have, in order to manage my remote servers?

    TIA,
    Phil Streiff, MCDBA

    There are quite a few differences between SSMS and SSMS-Express.

    You can obtain (and be properly licensed for) SSMS with SQL Server Workgroup, Standard and Enterprise Edition.

    |||

    Thanks Arnie,

    I will definitely upgrade to SSMS now, based on your input.

    I suppose I have to pay for the SQL2K5 Standard or Workgroup license, even though I'm only installing the Mgt Studio on my workstation and not the whole database engine.

    Phil

    |||

    SS 2005 Workgroup Edition is about $750 with 5 CALs. (Maybe better pricing is around.)

    IF you were in a dev environment, you could get SS Developer's Edition for about $50. But I don't think that it would be legit to manage production servers.

    Maybe one or more of your clients provide you with SSMS to manage their servers.

    For definitive licensing questions, call the licensing folks at:

    Good Luck!

    Mgmt Studio: Script Table as...

    Hi,

    I'm using SQL Server 2005 Express SP1 & Mgmt Studio express.

    I'm trying to use the script output to track my db changes in source code mgmt, but when I output a table to a script the first two bytes of the "text" file are 0xFF and 0xFE which sends my SCM into storingthe file in binary defeating the purpose of storing text files I can "diff" to see the changes.

    Does anyone know why the mgmt studio is doing this and is there a way to stop it?

    thanks!

    Management Studio creates UNICODE files so characters from all alphabets can be represented in the same file. Your SCM system is probably interpretting the UNICODE signature at the top of the file as being "binary."

    If you are scripting to a Query Editor Window, you can save the script as an ASCII file by clicking File | Save As... and clicking the little pull-down arrow on the right side of the save button to select the file type. US-ASCII is toward the bottom of the list.

    Hope this helps,
    Steve

    |||

    Thanks! This was helpful and it explains the situation.

    I'm working around it by the copy & paste method you mention while I deal with the SCM issue.

    It's interesting that SQL Server Mgmt Studio uses unicode BOM and Visual Studio uses utf-8 for it's configuration files, so the SCM has to deal with the many "standards" of unicode...

    life was not mean't to be easy...

    Can I manage MSDE databases in Management Studio? If not, how can I? How
    about SQL Express?
    When I try to attach an msde.mdf it just gets an "unknown error."

    Regards,
    Gary BlakelyTry to attach an MSDE MDF file to what?
    You can certainly manage existing instances of SQL Server 2000 (including
    MSDE). But you're not going to be able to just attach a SQL Server
    2000-based mdf (from MSDE or otherwise) to a 2005 instance.

    SQL Server 2005 Management Studio totally supports attaching SQL Server
    2000, MSDE2000 and SQL Express databases by using sp_detach_db/sp_attach_db
    stored procedure.
    Please try again via the following:
    1. Connect to your MSDE instance, and run the following statement:
    use master
    go
    exec sp_detach_db 'YourDatabaseName'
    2. Connect to your SQL Server 2005 instance and run the following statement:
    use master
    go
    exec sp_attach_db @.dbname='DatabaseName',
    @.filename1 = N'C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL
    Server\MSSQL$MSDE\Data\test.mdf',
    @.filename2 = N'C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL
    Server\MSSQL$MSDE\Data\test_log.ldf'
    Could you please mail me (changliw@.microsoft.com) the SQL error logs and a
    screenshot of the error message for further research?
    By default, the error logs of SQL Server 2005 instance are located in
    "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\LOG". You may check it
    if there are multiple instances installed on your computer.

    mgmnt studio express won't shrink .ldf files

    I'm attempting to truncate/shrink a db (mdf & ldf) to be able to zip it and email it. From Object Explorer I select the db->tasks->shrink->files->filetype->log->release unused spage or reorganize->shrink file to (0mb). This action does not change the size of the .ldf file. Shrinking the mdf works just like SQL 2000 - as expected. Why don't the actions taken do what they imply for the .ldf file? If this is not what the selections mean, what do they mean?

    thanks, jack

    If you want the LDF to skrink to 0mb then you need to truncate the log because SQL Server in shrink mode reserves what was active log now called virtual log before releasing space to the OS. You can run DBCC Shrinkfile and see what error you get because 2005 now logs the error in the error log. Run a search for DBCC Shrinkfile and Truncate log in the BOL. Hope this helps.

    |||Caddre, your response led me to information that explains the 'reality' of dealing with the logfile. In my case since I 'want' an empty db to distribute,I found that I could just detach the db, then delete the .ldf file. When I re-attach a 'new' empty log file is created. -- thanks, jack

    Message size limitations on Service Broker?

    Hi Everyone
    Does anyone know if there is/isn't a size limitation on the Service
    Broker. I have a remote machine running with express 2005 and I would
    like to send message to/from the machine in Head Office running SQL
    Server Enteprise 2005.
    Thanks in advance
    EricThe max message size of the service broker is 2 gigabytes (one billion
    Unicode characters) if I am not mistaken.
