Microsoft SQL Server and Other DBMS

Hello:

Many companies use DBMS that are not Microsoft SQL Server. Those companies use Oracle, PostgreSQL, MySQL and Ingres, for example. I'm looking for a paper o website which exponses the advantages (strengths) and disadvantages (weakness) of those DBMS. Why? Our customers would like a comparison between different systems, and we must show them the Microsoft SQL Server possibilities.

Can you help me with this? In terms of performance, speed, security, maintenance, etc.

Thanks.

We offer comparison information for SQL Server at http://www.microsoft.com/sql/prodinfo/compare/default.mspx, this information should help you start filling out the information you need to compare the different RDBMS systems out there.

Microsoft says "Use multiple datasets rather than subreports" ?

Hi-
Microsoft says "Use multiple datasets rather than subreports" - here's
one example but they have it ALL OVER the place:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms159268.aspx
Here's a snippet: "When deciding whether to use a subreport, you may
want to consider using a data region instead. Because the report
server processes each instance of a subreport as a separate report,
performance can be impacted. Data regions provide much of the same
functionality and flexibility as subreports, but with better
performance."
My problem is - I cannot get it to work. I have Parent and Child data
regions and related Parent and Child datasets. However, I cannot link
them together in the same fashion as a subreport would do using a
parameter.
My example would be a Client which has multiple Contacts and also
multiple Products.
The parent would show the Client name and all the Contacts. Then
beneath that would be all the Clients products. After that would be
the next client... and so on...
Can someone PLEASE help me here?Data regions are great IF they match what you are trying to do. They cannot
do parent-child/master-detail relationships. Subreports are the only way to
do this.
For instance, let's say you are are doing master detail but only showing one
master record and all the detail. Both master and detail can be retrieved
using the same parameter. Put the master in a data region at the top and
then the detail in another data region. However, you want multiple master
records and have the detail records showing for each master record then you
have to use subreports.

Please get that information to Microsoft as their documentation
implies that multiple data sets/regions are:
1) A VALID ALTERNATVIE TO SUBREPORTS
2) A PREFERRED METHOD TO SUBREPORTS
...and I've spent 2 days di(k1n& around trying to get it to work.
I'll just create a good old subreport and be done with it.

I hope anyone could help me by explaining i details.Because i want to make some analysis how microsoft decision tree works exactly. So Please explain me the process to build the tree completely with the method.

Thanks a lot.

Please clarify your question. I'm not sure what you are asking for- you want the equations used to determine a split?|||I'm so sorry because of confusing question. Yes what i mean is equations used to determine a split. Would you explain it detail for me? Metadata Inheritance

Hello,
I have written a mechanism which returns meta data back to a client for
different views. For example, one meta data item on a column is the Display
Name.
Now, so I don't have to keep attaching meta data to a particular column
every time I create a new view, I "inherit" the meta data from a parent view
or table by looking at all the same named columns in any views or tables
that the table depends (sysdepends) on.
The problem is, sometimes it make sense to change the name of a column in a
view from the underlying table (e.g. company table has a "name" column, but
in the view, you want to call it "company_name").
My question is, is there an easy way to determine where a view's column
really came from?
Thanks,
-PaulNever mind, I forgot to look at the depnumber column in sysdepends!

How do I correlate a column in the sysdepends table back to a column in the
resulting view's columns?

Hi Paul,
You don't.
You are probably thinking right now of fairly straight-forward views,
where such a mapping would be viable. But views can be fairly complex!
CREATE VIEW test
AS SELECT Col1 - Col2 AS A,
Col1 + Col2 AS B,
CASE WHEN EXISTS (SELECT *
FROM YZ
WHERE Foo = SomeTable.Bar)
THEN 1
ELSE 2
END AS C,
'Constant value' AS D,
Col3 + 1 AS E,
Col3 - 1 AS F
FROM SomeTable
How should each of the view's columns be correlated to each of the
underlying table's columns? And remember that this is also a fairly simple
example - I could come up with much more contrived views (some of my real
views for projects I do are much more contrived!)
Best, Hugo

Metadata in sql server 2005

Hi
I add extended properties to table in sql server 2005, for example i add Caption property to every column.
In case I generate a datasource from table in sql server in visual studio 2005, Is there a way that "Caption" property in datatable to be filled from that metadata, or metadata is useless for dataset.
Every time i had to fill manually the caption property of datatable generated .

hi,

you can access those extended properties calling fn_listextendedproperty function, similar to

SET NOCOUNT ON; USE tempdb; GO CREATE TABLE dbo.Invoice ( ID INT NOT NULL PRIMARY KEY , BillNo INT NOT NULL -- , others ) GO EXEC sp_addextendedproperty '1st property' , '1St property value' , 'user' , 'dbo' , 'table' , 'Invoice' , NULL , NULL; EXEC sp_addextendedproperty '2nd property' , '2nd property value' , 'user' , 'dbo' , 'table' , 'Invoice' , NULL , NULL; GO PRINT 'All available properties'; SELECT CONVERT(VARCHAR(20), [name]) AS [Property Name] , CONVERT(VARCHAR(20), [value]) AS [Property vCharValue] FROM ::fn_listextendedproperty( NULL , 'user' , 'dbo' , 'table' , 'Invoice' , NULL , NULL ); GO PRINT 'just the required [1st property] property'; SELECT CONVERT(VARCHAR(20), [name]) AS [Property Name] , convert(VARCHAR(20),[value]) AS [Property vCharValue] FROM ::fn_listextendedproperty( '1st property' , 'user' , 'dbo' , 'table' , 'Invoice' , NULL , NULL ); GO DROP TABLE dbo.Invoice; --< All available properties Property Name Property vCharValue -- -- 1st property 1St property value 2nd property 2nd property value just the required [1st property] property Property Name Property vCharValue -- -- 1st property 1St property value

so, assuming you are interested in the Invoice management, you have to query for all the properties of the dbo.Invoice table columns...

this can obviously fill a dataset or a datareader you can then consume to map as desired the returned values so you could assume the "1st property" is the caption of the corresponding UI control and you can set it accordingly..

BTW, to manage those properties outside the Microsoft tools you have to resort on http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa174648(SQL.80).aspx and http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms190243.aspx

regards|||Thank you for your reply.
I mean , what is the extended properties that may be used automatically by visual studio 2005.
For example , Can the "Caption " property of datatable created in vs 2005 , be set automatically using extended properties?
This property is useful, because form wizard creates label with that "caption" value(when i set it at design time), and textbox bound to column.

hi,

no, you have to deal with that "by hand"...

Metadata for SP parameter default values

I am looking for a way to list any default values for stored procedure
parameters.
For example with this stored procedure:
CREATE PROC dbo.pr_GetSomeData
(
@.SomeInt int,
@.AnotherInt int = 0,
@.SomeDate datetime = NULL
)
I'd like to be able to create a table that would look like this
ParameterName DefaultValue
@.SomeInt
@.AnotherInt 0
@.SomeDate NULL
I can get at the parameters themselves through information_schema.PARAMETERS
but I don't see a way to get at the default value.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Joel Reinford
Data Management Solutions LLCSQL Server does not store information about this in any sys table. One
possible solution could be parsing the sp code from syscomment or
information_schema.routines for the sp in question.

Merging two reports at runtime..

How do I merge two or more reports at runtime?
For example :
I have reports (or pages) A, B and C. The user chose to print pages A and C
only. I will have to merge A and C and print them as one report.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions/solutions.
-SurendraTake a look at http://blogs.msdn.com/bryanke/articles/71491.aspx. You could
use this code in a custom app, have the users pass report names as
parameters and then use these parameters in your code to print the
corresponding reports accordingly.

That was one option I had considered and was looking for a way to accomplish
this via the URL. Maybe I am being too naive and ambitious. Please let me
know if you have any other suggestions.

merging two databases into single one

Hi,
I have two databases.i would like to joing these two databases
into single one.How should i do it?
Example:
I have database named DatabaseA and its size was increased very high
so i renamed to DatabaseA_old & create new database DatabaseA.I have
upgraded the server and increased the database size. Now i would like
to make a single database.
Please help me.
Regards,
VijayCreate a new Database and use Import/Export Wizard to Import the Data
from database DatabaseA_old .
Well you have to attach the DatabaseA_old first and then do a import.|||That depends on the exact nature of your 'merge'. There is no single command
to accomplish the 'merge'. But in general you need to script out all the
objects in your old database, create them in the new database--if not already
there, and insert the data from the old database into the corresponding
tables in the new database.
Inserting data may be done with INSERT, SELECT INTO, or bulk copy out
followed by bulk copy in.
It's a good practice to script out the entire 'merge' procedure.
